Bendis about Spiderman’s future and new writer for Ultimate Spiderman

In a recent interview from newsarama they where able to talk to Brain Bendis about the “reboot” of the Ultimate Spiderman line. Now to give you a quick perspective of who Bendis is. He has been writing Ultimate Spiderman since the comics debut back in October of 2000 and is quoted as being partially responsible for the Ultimate line in general.

The interview went over a range of topics. One of the responses that seemed very telling from Bendis and I am not just talking about how he used the words “more better” which not only reads odd but is redundant. Was how he was very quick to say that  Ultimate Spiderman was still fine and that there was nothing wrong. He also stated that in the new series they would finally let poor Peter grow up, but just a little, not a lot is how he put it. while in the same universe some of the x-man are nearing or are already in their twenties.

Bendis also brought up that Jeff Loeb would be taking over the wrap-up on Ultimate Spiderman. Originally Bendis was quoted as saying he didn’t see the line being cancelled then later  when questioned he did go on to say  that they would end the run at issue number 133. Loeb was brought in bendis stated  so it could free up his time to begin working the new Spiderman run. You can’t help but notice that while in reading his answers about Loeb  he seems bitter that Jeff is getting to close this chapter of the Spiderman lore. Bendis went on to say that Loeb “drowned his “book of ideas” which is a real book that he carries around that has everything he wanted to do with Parker still, story wise. He then went on to say he was no longer sure “who was going to make it out alive.” But he did state that not everyone would make it to his new run and that there would be some new allies. He also said that you could pick up the last few comics then move onto the new run without being to much in the dark. He also promised to fans they would not have to once again go through watching Parker start all over, this is Parker just a little older with a small lost gap of time.

Now I don’t think to many could argue against how good Ultimate Spiderman was when it was still fresh and new.  It seems that Bendis truly believes making Parker a little older will relaunch him back to the golden days of Ultimate Spiderman. I confess that  I gave up on Spiderman at ten trades into the the series. So I’m sorry to say I am not to sure what has been happing with Peter. I hope that it had picked up. Though from talking to a friend who is a big Spiderman fan and seeing his reaction when told Bendis is taking over the new line didn’t bring me much hope. I  really hope that Bendis proves all the critics wrong. That all he needed was a shake up in the setting so he could really push how and what parker is capable of when he is no longer a starry eyed child but a wise cracking man.

In any case, the Ultimate series had two big goals when it started nearly a decade ago. First one  was to bring in new kids to read the comics. Which has worked when the series started I was fifteen and am now twenty-four. So I think they met the goal, and the second one was to push what you could do with the characters. The big example in the beginning that things had changed was when the Captain broke someone’s face.
